Working principles and comparison of advantages and disadvantages of LCD and OLED part six

Working principles and comparison of advantages and disadvantages of LCD and OLED part six

Jul 04, 2024

Due to the characteristics of the OLED screen, if DC dimming is used, when the brightness is too low and the voltage is too low, the screen will have an uneven effect like a rag, which will have a great impact on the display screen. Therefore, OLED screens cannot use DC dimming. Dimming can only use PWM.

Because organic materials of OLED are prone to aging, OLED cannot use high-frequency PWM dimming and can only use low-frequency PWM dimming. Generally, the highest frequency is around 250Hz, which some people with sensitive vision will notice and are more likely to suffer from visual fatigue.

The most harmful part of the light emitted by the screen to the human eye is blue light with a wavelength of 420-440. These high-energy rays can cause irreversible damage to the human retina. The backlight of a traditional LCD screen uses several high-brightness LED beads plus a uniform light plate. After all, a considerable part of the high-energy blue light emitted by these LED lamp beads is in this range.

The blue light of LCD is very harmful to the eyes, and the PWM dimming of OLED is also harmful to the eyes. In order to save costs, some low-end screens also use PWM dimming on the LCD. It's hard to say which one hurts more.
